OVERVIEW

OUR MISSION
The Center for Technology in Education strives to improve the quality of life of children and youth, particularly those with special needs, through teaching, research, and leadership in the use of technology. This unique partnership combines the research and teaching resources of The Johns Hopkins University and the leadership and policy support of the Maryland State Department of Education.

OUR BELIEFS

  • All students can learn. They have a right to appropriate instruction and a right to be in schools that provide it.
  • The education reform movement and the inclusion of children with disabilities cannot be separated.
  • Technology can transform education by providing equal access to the curriculum, transforming instruction, and measuring school accountability.
  • School is where children prepare for life; therefore, schools must respond to the expectations of students, parents, and the community.
  • Change is a process, not an event. As agents of change, schools must be supported at all levels through partnerships with school districts, state departments of education, and institutions of higher education.

OUR VISION
The faculty and staff of the Center for Technology in Education envision future learning environments in which:

  • Technology is a seamless part of the entire fabric of teaching and learning, not just an add-on.
  • Instruction is technology-rich, project-based, and collaborative, challenging all students to meet high academic standards and prepare for the jobs and careers of the Information Age.
  • Children with disabilities work side–by–side with their peers, progressing in the general education curriculum.
  • Teachers and other education leaders are connected with each other in a vast network of local, state, and national Web-based learning communities, through which they share information, exchange best practices, and stay abreast of the latest developments in the fast-paced world of educational technology.

WHO WE SERVE

  • Policy makers (state school officers, members of the state and local boards of education, deans of colleges of education, chairs of special education departments, school superintendents, assistant superintendents, the governor and his staff, and state legislators).
  • Educators and other service providers (general and special education teachers, early childhood specialists, community-based providers, related services providers, and paraprofessionals).
  • Local-level administrators and directors of local programs for infants and toddlers (K-12 school principals, directors of special education, and administrators of private schools).

WHAT WE DO

  • We conduct research to contribute to the field in our areas of specialty and to address issues that are crucial to our mission: equal access to the general education curriculum for all students, evidence-based instructional strategies that transform instruction, online learning and communities of practice, leadership that utilizes data to make sound instructional decisions, and application of new technologies in education.
  • We disseminate and publish our work to increase awareness of and interest in those crucial issues throughout the education community.
  • We design and deliver high quality professional development, both online and in person to increase educators’ knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • We implement programs that apply our models and tools to improve teaching and education and help all students experience success in school.
  • We build and customize decision- and performance-support tools for educators.
  • We work to inform and influence education policy to help ensure that policy and resource allocation support the goals of making education and achievement accessible to all children, including those with disabilities.
